A RETURN TO THE BENCH
In the hockey world, we often talk about “hockey tough”—the ability to take a hit, get back up, and finish the game; but for Coach Dave, that definition was rewritten far away from the bright lights of the arena. After three years as an assistant and a standout debut season as a head coach for his oldest son’s team, Dave’s life was altered in an instant by a shocking farming accident.
The toll was immense: a traumatic brain injury, a fractured skull, a brain bleed, and debilitating damage to his eyes, neck, and back. The diagnosis was a permanent disability that affects every waking moment, leading doctors to deliver the crushing news that a return to his previous career of physically demanding farm work—or even a “normal” 9-to-5—was no longer possible.
Long before the accident, Dave was the quintessential “hockey dad”. With the family budget stretched thin, there was no room for expensive power-skating camps or summer leagues. Instead, Dave turned his driveway, his garage, and a plywood backyard rink (no bigger than a kitchen table) into a laboratory for development. Whether on ice or inline skates, he became a master at teaching elite skating and shooting techniques using whatever space was available.
When the injury struck, those memories became his lifeline. Throughout a gruelling rehabilitation process, hockey wasn’t just a sport, it was his North Star. Analyzing NHL and World Junior games with his children and working out alongside his family became the focal point of his recovery. His goal was never just to walk again—it was to get back to the bench.
Today, Dave lives with the daily reality of constant pain, muscle imbalances and crippling postconcussion symptoms. While these are significant hurdles, they have also gifted him with a unique coaching angle: unparalleled empathy.
In a sport where head injuries are a serious concern, Dave understands the invisible struggle of a concussion in a way those without first-hand experience simply cannot. He provides a specialized perspective for young players returning from injury, offering learning styles and emotional support tailored to the complex recovery of the mind and body. He isn’t just coaching systems, he’s coaching the person.
Refusing to let his limited physical capabilities define his contribution to his family or the community, Dave launched M4K. The mission is simple but profound: providing high-quality coaching to families regardless of their geography or their bank account.
Coach Dave’s story isn’t just about a life-changing injury, it’s about resolve. He has proven that while a body may be broken, a coach’s heart, and the desire to give back to the game are truly indestructible.
